Welcome to Montgomery, Texas!

Montgomery lies nestled among the magnolia and sweet gum trees on Highway 105. This tiny gateway to the Piney Woods region is an important part of Texas. In 1823, Andrew J. Montgomery established a trading post a few miles to the west of the current town site. One December 14, 1837, the town named for Andrew Montgomery became the first county seat of Montgomery County and the third county formed under the Republic of Texas.

A stroll through the historic nineteenth-century downtown area, which includes two chapels and several other historic buildings, takes visitors back in time.

In 1839, it was the birthplace of the official state flag, whose bold design represents the loyalty, purity and bravery of early Texas settlers. A replica of the original flag design, sketched by Montgomery postmaster and pharmacist, Dr. Charles Bellinger Stewart, is on display at the N.H. Davis Pioneer Complex and Museum.
